The Power of Image

We hear it all the time. Many of us know it to be true, yet refuse to acknowledge its power. What is it? The true effect that our image has on the way people perceive us.

As vain as it is, 75% of our opinion of someone happens in the first 30 seconds of meeting them. Think about it: what do you do when you meet someone new? Take a look at this photo:

These are the “Real Housewives of Orange County.” How long did you view the photo? Probably less than a minute, right? Now think honestly: what thoughts ran through your mind just now? Like most people, you probably thought, “Here we go again, just a bunch of women living off their rich husbands and getting all that plastic surgery.” In some instances, that may be true. But even if it isn’t, would you care to learn the truth about these ladies? You probably wouldn’t want to hear it because you’ve already formed your concrete opinion of them based on how they look.

Here’s a real-life example: my sister and I went shopping in Temecula yesterday. I was dressed casually (wearing CAbi, nonetheless) but I suppose because I was coordinated and fashionably current, I was approached more often. Salespeople greeted me, smiled at me, asked if I needed help. They seemed to ignore my sister who wore white skinny leg jeans and a black tank top. In her purse was her silk CAbi Gypsy Top so she put it on which instantly transformed her look from careless casual to effortlessly chic. Literally within minutes, she was being pulled aside and shown products and being acknowledged! She couldn’t believe that something as simple as changing her shirt completely changed the way people responded to her.

Long story short, here’s the lesson: don’t assume that people will accept you just the way you are because that’s just who you are and if they don’t like it they can just get over it. Updating your look not only will change the way people respond to you, but it will also make you feel better.
